Blogging Lesson in Flexibility

I heard it once said that, sometimes, content creators have to pivot mid-course to make sure they’re headed down the right path that will lead them to success in their creative endeavors. Of course, I’m paraphrasing the statement because it’s been a minute since I first heard this message and the name of its originator escapes me at the moment.

I bring this message to the forefront of my memory bank and in front of you today to prepare you for the apology that is to come.

For those of you following “The Art of People Business” installments, you know that today was to mark part three of “The Misguided Worker Mentality” series. And I had all the best intentions of making good on my promise. Here are my exact words from last Thursday’s post . . .

“NOTE ⇒ Next Thursday, I’ll finish up with the last type of misguided worker. I’ll also address some issues that can arise when you’re in working relationships with these folks as well as possible solutions for dealing with problematic situations.”

Well, next Thursday is today. And here’s where the apology makes its entrance.

I’ve been forced to pivot here as there are some pressing matters in the creative entrepreneurial world that have taken over my schedule for the rest of the week and require some immediate attention. Therefore, I would like to apologize for not delivering on my intended post for the day. My heart and intentions were in the right place.

But, I must reserve the right to temporarily table part three and hopefully provide it to you next Thursday. (I won’t make a definitive promise though; because one thing that’s becoming clearer to me is that flexibility should be built into the creative things that I do.)

Rubber Bands

For the most part, I’ve been blessed to have this opportunity to create on my own terms. So, why not create within a framework that allows for changes to be made to workflow without feeling guilty?

And, why the mini guilt trip? Well, I do believe that I still function, in some aspects, like the employee working for the employer who had certain expectations that had to be fulfilled in determined time frames. And when expectations were not met, it set some problematic courses into action.

Jana, you’re not in the old HR office anymore. You can relax a little. The folks that you serve now are probably a little more flexible in their demands than you’re used to. Actually, they’re not making demands of you at all. So, chill!

Furthermore, you’re now in charge of your own schedule. Just build in some time cushions, already! Because last time I checked, I don’t recall anyone in the blogosphere asking you to promise or pledge a certain something by a specific date.

So, don’t put unnecessary pressures on yourself. And most importantly, don’t put yourself in a position to apologize for having to make some changes. Life is full of them.

Wow! That was a nice little pep talk to myself. I do feel somewhat better now.

And, I do believe that I will be making more of a conscious effort to be careful about placing demands on myself that I may not have the ability to carry out. I’m also determined to get skilled at the art of pivoting, when necessary.

Flexibility is the Key to Longevity.
