Adventures in Tutoring Daily Challenge – Day 22

Let’s move forward with the “reasons why I favor online tutoring over in-person tutoring,” shall we? I think today would be the perfect day to do so. I’m on Reason #2, but I want to make sure and catch you up if you missed Reason #1, which was a two-parter. You can check out both parts (directly below):

Now, on to Reason #2:

Reason #2 – The Far Reach

I’ve never been a techie person. Not really. I know that tech can do a lot of great things and provides a lot of conveniences for people, but I’ve also witnessed it do a lot of damaging things in people’s lives, as well. Oh, and the children! Technology has created some of the most egregious and lasting negative impressions/influences that have affected young people in their present and will affect them well into their futures.

But, I’m not here to challenge the misuse of technology and its corresponding negative ramifications. No, not at all. Instead, I’d like to highlight the blessing that technology has been in assisting me in my virtual tutoring journey.

What virtual tutoring has offered me is the ability to travel through space and time to get to children I would, otherwise, never have the opportunity to serve.

I mean . . . my face and surroundings end up in the location of children who live in other states, other countries, and other time zones than where I reside. What!? How in the world can I live where I live and communicate face-to-face (through an electronic device) with another human being who is nowhere near my physical location?

It blows my mind when I really sit back and think about how technology can put individuals together in a virtual room who may never, ever see each other in person. Virtually, though, is the next best thing.

I’ve used Zoom and Google Meet so many memorable times to commune with family and friends. And, we’ve been able to handle some of the most life-impacting to-dos through a virtual medium. So, you have to know that tutoring the children I’ve been blessed to work with goes right up there on the list with the “memorable times” and “life-impacting to-dos” I’ve experienced with family and friends.

The virtual reach is far and unbelievable!

And, I test it every time I meet with my tutees and mentees. As a matter of fact, none of the children I work with for tutoring (or the membership) live in my city. All of them are out-of-state or out-of-the-country.

And currently, only two of them are even in my time zone.

So, when I say the “virtual reach is far and unbelievable,” I wholeheartedly mean that in the best way possible. After all, when looking at my stats (on the demographics for geographical location for all the kiddos I serve), it would become immediately clear that there’d be no absolute way for me to do what I do as a tutor or mentor without the online (virtual) component of delivering educational instruction.

Therefore, I have to say that (for me, personally) online tutoring rules over in-person tutoring every time, because it allows me to carry out my purpose-driven mission without physical location limitations.

A time or two or more, I’ve been known to call myself a “Literacy Advocate,” because I am. For sure! But, you might as well add “Online Tutoring Enthusiast” right next to it. And, I’m proud of it!

Reason #3 — coming up next.
