Back with Literacy in Mind

I’M SO EXCITED to be back with you all, sharing in this last half of 2024. And, what will I be sharing, you may be asking. Well, all things literacy, of course. We’re going all out with literacy advocacy on this here blog site.

It’s been a lot of minutes since we last visited, hasn’t it? Time has flown, but I definitely haven’t been sitting idly by while the days have marched right along. I’ve been busy, my friend. So busy that I had to take a little hiatus from my warm and cozy place right here to set some other things in order over yonder. I’ll be getting to the “over yonder” stuff in due time. But, that’s not my focus today. My focus today is to welcome you back to my new abode, my new Degrees of Maternity location.

Now, the address was changed some time back to: degreesofmaternity.com. But, I’ve made a few home improvement updates to the look of my digs as well. It was time — because what’s the purpose of making a move and just taking all your old stuff to the new address? Some spring cleaning needed to be done (and is still being done to be completely honest with you).

And while I’ve made the move and done some DIY updates, I still have a lot of work to do. You know how it is with moves. You get moved over, throw away a little bit, arrange old stuff differently in the new space, buy a few new things to make it look different from the old space, and then leave a bunch of boxes (with stuff still in them) stacked up in the extra bedroom, closet, garage, attic, or whatever storage space you have handy in the place. Unless you have no extra space to hide the boxes, in which case they end up taking residence next to a wall, shoved in the corner somewhere, under a table or two, or a combination of all the above.

That’s life with a fresh move. And so, I have some boxes of stuff, you know? I have some boxes that are still sitting unpacked and I’ll get to them eventually. I hope. I pray. But for now, I’m proud of myself for stepping out and making the move.

The move to making Degrees of Maternity “. . . a HUB for Literacy Advocates” has truly been a journey. And you probably can see that if you’ve hung in here with me from my initial move into my original space in the blogosphere.

There have been many pivots in the choice of home decor I’ve chosen to display at Degrees of Maternity, but its underlying fashion has always been interwoven into reading and writing vibes (literacy) in some way, shape, or form. I guess that’s because I’m a natural literacy advocate by heart. Can’t help it. When something’s in your heart, it has no choice but to manifest itself in your life.

For me, literacy advocacy has chosen to show up in its pallette of various colors within my place and space at the Degrees of Maternity blog. Well actually, it’s showing up in other places and spaces where I reside as well — like my newsletter, online stores, content writing services, and tutoring services. BUT — my BLOG SITE — hey, that’s the HUB for it all. You’ll find a connection to all of the above RIGHT HERE.

So, I love my home here. Had to vacate it temporarily to go establish some of the other places I’m at. But, there’s no place like home. Home is where the heart is. (Guess I’m on a roll with the mantras.) And, I will always return back to it no matter how long I’m away from it. Just know, though, that I don’t plan to make any more lengthy stays away for this last half of 2024. Now, I can’t vouch for the distant future, because I don’t know what the future holds. But for now, I plan on staying put. That’s the plan, anyway.

By the way, how do you like the outside of the house? I hope you like it; but if you don’t, I get it. It might take you some time to get used to it. I know. Change is like that sometimes. But, I hope it rubs off on you soon — like in a warm and fuzzy sort of way.

I strategically changed the tagline to be representative of what’s inside the house when you step inside the foyer. And, the updated banner is that visual, home decor accent piece that creates the “literacy” ambiance – the homey mood — I’m looking for.

Now, excuse the mess with the “Categories” section of the blog. Here’s where everything gets real behind the scenes of a move. I’m straightening up right now, but the deep cleaning hasn’t begun yet. I’m slowly unpacking the boxes. So, give me a little time to get everything in order. I haven’t had the heart to throw much away. And, I don’t know if I can bring myself to ever do it. I’m not a hoarder. I just love what I love.

Getting rid of memories and evidence of my blogging journey is just not palatable to me right now. So, you’ll probably see old blog posts that don’t have anything to do with literacy hidden away somewhere (like in the “Not Necessarily Literacy-Related” category) because I JUST CAN’T throw them out. That would be like trying to throw a little piece of me out. No, can’t do it. (I need all of me. Every bit.) So, the old, non-literacy blog posts will remain on the site for now.

You might even check out some of that old stuff for the fun of it. I mean — why not? You’ll see where my head and heart were during those times. I told you, it’s been a journey to get here. And, how can you just throw away earlier parts of your journey when they helped you get to where you are now and where you’re going in the future.

Well, I’ve done enough rambling about the new digs. I think it’s time to put this blog post baby to rest. But just know that I plan on seeing you on Thursdays, here at my new place. Please don’t throw out my invitation with the junk mail. YOU ARE WELCOME ANY TIME! Come hang out with me. The content around here may be more focused, more informational, more call-to-action-like; but, it’s gonna be good stuff — for the literacy lover (not so much for those who aren’t).

Degrees of Maternity — a blog site all about literacy . . . the good, the bad, and the — GOOD. Bet you thought I was going to say “ugly,” didn’t you? Hee. Hee.

See you on the literacy side.

  1. Hi there Mthobisi – WOW! I am SO EXCITED about your books! That is fantastic that they’ll be out on Amazon! Self-publishing a book is such an accomplishment. So, kudos to you, my friend. Please keep me posted on that.

And, I will be praying for you and your family, Mthobisi, and for protection in such times of turmoil. You are definitely understanding the one — the Creator of heaven and earth — to call on during troublesome times. Stay safe and prayed up. Take care, Mthobisi. And, keep writing.

  2. Wow. Absolutely Remarkable and super blog post Mrs Jana Williams. Firstly, I appreciate your determination to be back at blogging about your chosen niche which is “Literacy works” both the good and the bad✨👏🙏

Also, I am impressed that you are very busy with your projects and we all need a break from blogging and focus on other things. I too plan on taking a break from blogging a few days this June to focus on writing and editing my fashion books that will be available on AMAZON📕✨✨,

Lastly, let us keep going my friend. Life in 2024 sees as hard as a rock because of the terrible events that are happening in my country like GBV, crime and people who shoot other people for money. I pray God helps us and grant us strength to overcome all challenges✨👏

  3. Phiiiiiiiiiilllllll!!! – Oh, it’s like returning home and having a welcoming party ushering you back home. Thank you so much for this message. I wouldn’t expect any less of you (with the whole “keeping an eye” on me. YOU . . . keeping an eye on things is going to help me tremendously in continuing to work on my DIY home improvement projects within my new digs. I appreciate you SO SO much, my wise counselor. Words from you never fall on deaf ears at Degrees of Maternity. I pray all is well for you and your family. Take care, Phil. And please DO keep visiting me. I need another educator’s perspective in keeping me on track (or in the saddle — in a good way) around here.

  4. Jana, It is good to see you have managed to get back on the horse. Here’s hoping that you can remain in the saddle and ride off to wherever you want to go. I will be keeping an eye on you, so you will just have to continue on your journey. All the best. Regards, Phil ________________________________
