Blogging While Multifaceted: A Blogging Truth and Writing Therapy Reflection

When there are multiple areas of interest that tickle your fancy, it can be extremely difficult to keep the creative content in one area of focus. Extremely difficult! If I’m honest about the whole thing, I must admit that I’m NOT a fan of the “niche down” and stay there philosophy. And while I can observe and take note that this strategy of blogging works for many, it just doesn’t work for me.

I bet you know what’s coming next, right? I’m totally setting you up with some foreshadowing of things to come, so I might as well just come clean right now. Please note that . . .

Content is about to take on some more nuances here at Degrees of Maternity.

I can’t help it. The pigeon hole just isn’t my preferred residence. I CAN’T LIVE THERE . . . SERIOUSLY! So, I tend to engage in the old switch-er-roo on you at certain, pivotal times of the blogging year. And, back-to-school is one of those times.

At back-to-school time, I tend to feel creatively inspired and educationally motivated by the school of life; and my desire to make some changes, branch out, explore, and wear the honorable badge of “Multifaceted Blogger” in spite of what the blogging gurus say rings loud and clear.

It’s the process of change management over and over again. And, I’m not talking about ditching the “simplifying life” mindset that I’ve taken on. No, not at all. “Simplifying life” is always going to be one of my major life goals, because I simply CAN’T do all the things. But, what I’m talking about today is more of a natural way of being that, I believe, takes some of the complexity out of living life.

Let me try to explain, using my content creation journey as an example.

In my estimation, doing what comes natural to do involves riding the wave of organically living life and then writing about those life lessons learned along the way. It’s that whole tagline I aim to uphold on this blog site. You know the one I’m talking about — the one that shows up in my blog banner:

Degrees of Maternity . . . where life education never ceases

And while I may switch up on some things when it comes to blogging, that statement (above) has pretty much been the constant around here.

Change.

I’m definitely not bloggingly resistant to it. Life changes. Right? So, wouldn’t it be safe to say that my blogging content would move with the ebbs and flows of life? It’s the natural way I function as a content creator. Instead of going against the grain, I go along with it.

And, I’m not knocking those who faithfully keep to their niches and thrive there. I think that’s great. Do whatever works for YOU. But around here, please practice flexibility, because I’m a multifaceted individual who loves to delve in and out of varying focuses of interest that ignite my creative fuel (based on where life is taking me at a particular period in my timeline).

And even generally-speaking, please don’t let others tell you that you can’t creatively enjoy different aspects of your life that motivate you in positive ways.

I often think that exploring your multifaceted talents and interests is a way of providing balance and healing in your life. I mean . . . it works for me that way, anyway.

And since life presents its many challenges, can’t we just agree to knock one of those challenges down right now? The challenge of limiting ourselves to one good thing.

Let’s take the taste of food, for example, since I’m actually hungry right now and about to eat some yummy breakfast after I finish my thoughts here.

Inarguably, I’d much rather enjoy the different seasonings and spices in my foods, exploring their unique flavors and how they affect the foods they complement rather than stick to only salt and pepper ALL OF THE TIME.

I mean . . . salt and pepper do their thing for sure, but cumin and oregano and basil and garlic powder and dill and ginger and rosemary and Italian seasoning, and chili powder and paprika and cayenne pepper and, and, and. Well, you get where I’m coming from.

The spiceS of life.

Being multifaceted and thriving in your natural talents and inclinations toward things you like to do (and in my case, write about) have healing properties to them. Simply stated, it can be downright therapeutic to do YOU in the different areas of your being.

Which kind of reminds me of my previous blog post, entitled Writing Therapy ISN’T the ONLY Therapy Out There, where I discuss that there is more than one way to get your healing juices flowing. Just like there is more than one way (or subject matter) to blog about.

And, just think about it.

What if you limit yourself to one area of focus and then, eventually, get stagnant or run out of fuel in that one area? Or, you wear it out so much that you end up hating it? Or, wonder if you hinder your growth in the other areas, trying to cater to THAT ONE AND ONLY LOVE you’re pretending to have.

Hey, it’s possible to have more than one interest and love more than one thing, you know.

In fact, if you really want your blogging community to get to know what you’re about, it should go without saying that you should get comfortable with being who you are with them. That includes sharing the different areas of your being in which you are passionate about and naturally flow in or have natural inclinations towards.

And in closing, I’ll wind down here and let you know that I intend to deliver on the whole multifaceted thing. And, I’ve already warned you that this time of the year is my jam when it comes to making the necessary tweaks to my content strategy.

So, just know that the “Writing Therapy” series isn’t going anywhere. As promised, I intend to give this topic attention throughout the rest of 2023 (and probably beyond), because it’s just that important.

But don’t be surprised if another one of my passions/interests comes out in full force in this last half of 2023. I have some situational things (life happenings) coming down the pike that will inevitably come into clear focus in the next month or so, and those happenings will totally influence some of the content here at Degrees of Maternity.

I’m keeping the particulars hush-hush at the moment, but I’ll be taking you along for this new ride once it’s ready to take off. You can count on it.

  1. Awwwww. Thanks for all the kind words, Mthobisi. I appreciate you noticing the blog title as I’m trying to get better at making them more eye-catching, but not clickbaity-like. So, I hope you found the post to be true to form (true to the title). Yes, there are different things that we can be interested in at any one point in time as bloggers. And, I continue to struggle with trying to limit myself. So, I’ve decided to branch out a little and not just limit myself to writing therapy for the remainder of 2023. Hope you’ll be able to find something you enjoy in the new topic of conversation that I intend to start soon (along with the topic I’m currently fixated on). Keep up the wonderful work you do with your writing, as well. And you’re right, blogging is “no child’s play.” It definitely takes some work. But, I’m all up for the challenges that this work brings along, and I’m guessing you are too. Writers write. Keep on writing my friend. We get better and better the more we keep pursing our writing dreams. Have a great week.

  2. Exceptional blog post Jana Williams my awesome Blogger friend. Well, this is an interesting topic to delve about and I have to say, I can relate about one thing or two here and it is well detailed.

Also, I have to say I like this blog title, it really grabbed me like a fish hooked on a fishing net with nowhere to go. This title here “BLOGGING WHILST MULTIFACETED:A BLOGGING TRUTH AND WRITING THERAPY” is well documented and although I like to write my blog post on a single niche like “MENS FASHION & STYLE”, your point of writing about different things of life like the example of trying different spices is a valid point.

Lastly, I have to say that I am impressed with your grammar and your goals for this year and beyond, all the best, you will need the luck, writing a blog is no child’s play🙏
