Blogging Truths Be Told: Blog Reminiscing is Eye-Opening!

Here’s what reading your old blog posts can potentially do to you —

They . . . have . . . a HIGH probability of giving you the “willies” when you go back and read their written words. I mean it’s just down-right, cringeworthy reading a lot of the time.

But, wonder if you didn’t have them to read. Wonder if your blogging progression was erased. Like your first 50 posts got deleted; and after being three years into blogging you could no longer go back and read what you wrote back then or contemplate what you were thinking through the words written at the beginning of your blogging career.

What a loss that would be — cringeyness and all. Because you get to the point where you really appreciate having that early stuff to read and reminisce over.

Blogging history in the form of what you’ve chronicled in your writing is pure gold.

Why?

Well, because it shows you the growth you’ve made in the blogging path you’ve taken over time.

Lately, I’ve been in a total zone of educational and career growth in a lot of different areas. I’ve been:

  • taking courses on content writing and copywriting,
  • reading books on simplifying life and copywriting,
  • watching videos and reading articles on SEO copywriting,
  • researching companies and organizations in need of writers,
  • absorbing info on writing best practices,
  • working on pitches and proposals for my content writing services, and
  • onboarding for a new client and learning the ropes for writing my first student guide assignment.

I’ve been doing all the writerly things to prepare me for my next level in writing, involving writing for others’ platforms. But, that wasn’t my goal when I first started blogging.

Actually, my whole goal with blogging in the beginning was to start out as a mommy blogger site, where I talked about my children all the time and the joys of being a mom. And, it pretty much started out that way.

Furthermore, my blog was really the secondary writing focus, because I had my eyes set on writing books for a living and blogging would provide that content marketing channel to build an audience that I could gently direct to my books — which, by the way, were supposed to be children’s books.

(Hey, I still have writing a children’s book as an item on my bucket list. And, it ain’t going away. Still have this as a gold-level goal of mine.)

And, I actually DID self-publish a book, Playground Instructions for the Growing Adult. However, as creative as I am, I can’t wiggle my way into the children’s book author category with this debut book-writing endeavor of mine. It was close but missed the mark by A LOT, since my book is for adults and all about lessons that adults can learn from children.

Hey, I did get the “child” component in there though. So, YAY me.

But anywho, blogging initially was to start out as the secondary writing focus with book writing as the primary. And tell me how blogging is now the HUB for which every Degrees of Maternity venture branches out of. It’s the center of my writing existence and the driving force, lifeline, and engine that keeps Degrees of Maternity alive and well.

And while you’re at it, I also need you to tell me how I’ve managed to bloggingly hone in on personal and professional development, reading and writing development tips, and the writing process, when I originally intended to talk about all things mommying, parenting, and the family dynamic. Furthermore, I never envisioned creating reading and writing digital products and performing writing services in my future, either.

And I certainly didn’t see myself “niching down” – NOT EVER! I wanted to blog about all the things, especially on the topics mentioned above along with health and wellness topics. Whew! And health and wellness is a WHOLE THING to tackle in and of itself.

But, here I am. In all my unplanned nuances. Just letting my natural progression of growth take me to bigger and better places than I’d ever imagined.

And, having my blogging history chronicled here at Degrees of Maternity is ABSOLUTELY priceless. It brings me to a self-discovery continuum that I marvel at sometimes. Not because I’m doing all the right things, but because I’ve done plenty of wrong things and can see how I’ve had enough strength to dust myself off, try something new, and keep it moving.

If I can be so bold as to say, “I inspire myself.” (I know you can say the same for yourself in arenas in your life as well, so no shame in patting yourself on the back when it’s well-deserved.)

Hey, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve pivoted; but if you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know it’s a lot.

Let’s just say that I have no problem pivoting if I think it’ll help me in my growth process. I want to get better, folks. And sometimes the only way to do so is to experiment a little bit here and little bit there to see what does and doesn’t work. You know — that whole “trial and error” thing.

That’s because I’m ALWAYS on a path of learning and getting better. I have to be if I want to grow and succeed in this space I’m in. I have to if I want to thrive in The Big 3 and reach my rightful placement. I have to if I want to accomplish any of the goals I’ve set out to accomplish.

So tell me. Have you gone back and looked at your old blog posts or the old blog posts of those you follow? What have you noticed about the beginning blogging stages versus what’s going on right now? Have there been some changes? Or no? If so, are the changes leading you or that someone you follow to better situations?

I sure hope so. We want to change for the better.

And if we’re not moving in a positive growth pattern, then it’s time to pivot and experiment with something new.

It’s all about moving toward life betterment around these parts.

Happy Blogger 1

  1. You are so right, Phil. Focusing is in order around here. And, I think I’m on a pretty good path toward doing something with the simplification process. It may seem like I’m working on a lot, but I’ve really cut down to the bare minimum. Just concentrating on my writing here at Degrees of Maternity and the content writing services at the moment. I’ll be picking up more action on my online stores for reading and writing resources when it gets closer to the school year starting back up. But, I’m really trying. And, I’m kind of proud of myself actually. It takes a lot for a woman who wants to do all the things to STOP and strategically narrow the ALL down to SOME, but I’m doing it. Having wise folks like yourself to help keep me in remembrance of that will definitely be needed as those tendencies to take on MORE try to creep in. So, thanks for the reminder. I’m listening. Hee. Hee.

  2. Hey there Kat. Thanks as always for making me feel so special and appreciated in this blogging space I occupy. And yes, the cringey stuff is a part of that history that’s developed us into who we are creatively — today. I love being able to see that growth. Makes me feel like I’m travelling a positive direction that’s leading to something purposeful and worthwhile. I imagine that everyone who experiences growth (for the better) can relate to appreciating the process that blogging has put them through (even in the early stages of their journeys). And, I’ve always appreciated just how giving you are in your blogging experience. Literally, it comes through loud and clear in your creative growth. Those things you did in the beginning all contributed to the wonderful Creative you are today and the success you’re receiving by being who you are and doing what you do. Keep doing YOU, Kat.

  3. Jana, Boy, looking at your list of works in progress seem to me to be huge! I could not even carry out half of them. I know I have said this before, but I believe you need to focus, focus, focus. Set your priorities, and work on them progressively, not concurrently. Sorry for preaching, but I thought it had to be said.
By the way, I have never looked back on past work, I only move forward. I am even having difficulty reading back chapters of my novel., although I know I need to edit same. I get the most buss out of achieving something in the first place after also enjoying the journey getting there. The climb to the top of a mountain should be as enjoyable as the sense of achievement when you get there, and the view from the top.
    That’s enough of that rubbish!
    Regards, Phil

  4. The path of learning and getting better is so much fun! I love looking back at where I was and seeing where I began. Before I really started blogging again in 2018, I loved looking at where some of the well-known bloggers started, and it was just so nice to see everyone begins somewhere and, along the way, life just happens to things change and evolve. Haha, as much as some of my early posts make me cringe, they’re a part of the blog’s history and getting rid of them just doesn’t feel right. I have absolutely loved seeing how your blog and everything you do around it has changed.
