So, I’m making a little departure from working through the steps in the creative entrepreneurship process to “stop and take a look around” at the world in which I’m living in. And, what I’m seeing is quite troubling.
There is so much going on — so many things and circumstances negatively affecting our societies on a global, national, regional, state, local, and community level.
And just plain on a human level! It’s mind-boggling!
And then, I think. What can I do as a creative entrepreneur to bring some focused perspective on ways to encourage people during these challenging times? After all, that’s what I aim to do at Degrees of Maternity — shine some light into what seems to be a lot of darkness sometimes.
But, I don’t want this blog post to be a downer. That’s not what my brief discourse today is meant to do. My actual goal with this post is to gear us up for some action in the direction of life betterment.
I may not be able to do much as an individual. But if I’m able to help empower others to figure out ways they can help themselves rise above these challenging times and live successfully while navigating through them, then I’ll feel like I’ve truly used this platform in a humanly compassionate way. I’ll feel like I’ve contributed in my own small way toward making things better for someone out there.
We need that these days, you know. Compassion for others. People are losing their livelihoods out here in droves, and the mental, physical, and financial stress that will be placed on people is just too heart-wrenching to think about.
Needless to say, making human connections that count is what’s on the agenda for Degrees of Maternity (me).
Genuinely connecting with others’ needs is pretty much where my mind’s been lately. I mean . . . it always has, but I’ve never felt it as strongly as I do today.
The pandemic has created so many unique needs out there that they’re too numerous to count. So, I thought I’d just start with what I can do in my little nook of the world and go from there. I figure . . . every little bit one person can do in a positive direction helps. Right?
And I wholeheartedly want to use this platform to provide beneficial information that will assist others in using and/or developing their own personal and professional skills sets to help them and their families contribute to the overall well-being of their households.
And to that end, the positive messaging will continue to keep flowing, but in a what can we do to create opportunities of sustainable and more self-sufficient daily living for ourselves type of way. Seriously.
Don’t ask me exactly what my part will be in such an endeavor, because I honestly do not know. But here’s what I can say — why not do what you can where you are and with whatever resources you have access to? And for me, that’s my creative content.
The call is real, folks. I feel that tug to do SOMETHING (my purpose-driven mission for the times, perhaps) — whatever that “something” is. And, time will flesh all of that out. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Again, once I really took the time to stop and look around and analyze my surroundings, here’s what I identified:
there are plenty of opportunities for this creative entrepreneur to create or do something beneficial that provides a solution to real problems that real people are facing during this pandemic-stricken time and beyond.
My go-to motto these days: Be a Blessing.

Hey there Phil – there is no need to apologize as I’m just so honored that you even take the time to comment on my blog. And, you provide such food for thought in your responses. It’s truly refreshing. And, you’re spot on in noting how important the family unit is. I truly think that’s where life improvement starts. Really, if I can be quite frank, I think life improvement starts with an individual. Just one. Ourselves. And if everyone could think in terms of what one thing he or she can do to make life better for him- or herself and the lives of those around him or her, what a wonderful world this could be. But, of course, we can’t control what others do — only encourage them to seek life improvement in positive ways. And if that one person can positively impact his or her life, just think how far-reaching that potential can possible spread in that person’s family, neighborhood, community, and so on. Improvements in society can truly happen when one person chooses to act on ways leading to progress. That positive energy has the potential to spread from the individual to others. And, the thought is that if we see enough individuals doing that in their own circles of influence, then there’s no limit to the life-impacting changes that can benefit a world-at-large. So, I say let’s all just start with ourselves. And if we do that, then I think we’re off to a great start.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but life somethings seems to get in the way. You raise a few good points in this post and I am not sure where to start. There is indeed, many things in this world that need improving, but the question is, where would one start? The other vital question is, who or what organization, should, or even could, improve the vital outcomes? A person can always improve ones own outlook on life, and that in itself, will improve others. We all somehow affect how others see the world, it just varies as to how many and how much.
While your ambition to “… create opportunities of sustainable and more self-sufficient daily living for ourselves” is indeed commendable, like you, I am not sure where one should start. The current world is, at least in my opinion, not in a good place. I think one of the major reasons for that, at least in the western world, is the general populations preoccupation with money, possessions and power. When any of these predominate in so many people’s thinking, it leads to greed, selfishness and a one dimensional society. All of this, and more, is leading the decline of western society as a whole.
The main problem is that, fundamentally, we are all animals, and animals are inclined to act that way. It all starts with the family unit, and that is not, generally, in great shape. Children are those that will make up future society and how they think and act will determine the outcome. Children who have been successfully bought up, by both their parents and society as a whole, to be logical, thoughtful, active, considerate, caring and hard working, will become good parents and members of society themselves. That is where the future starts and eventually where it will end up. It is very difficult to fundamentally change what has taken some 20 years to develop, and that is where most adults are. Change children’s outlook and actions will change future society, and I think that is where one has to begin. It is one of the reasons I have volunteered in the classrooms at my local school for the last 12 years. Even thinking one has made a small improvement, gives one a sense of achievement, although I cannot say that I feel that every day.
All the best in your quest!
