Day 13 of the 30-Day Challenge: Creative Movement:
Task: To go on a fishing excursion with my husband.
Reason for Task: Well, why not? Although today was a creative content dud. It was still a productive day in its own right. I decided to use today as one of my personal goals days. You have to have one of these every once in awhile, you know.
Also, my husband’s been trying to get me to go fishing with him for several weeks now. So, I thought it would be fitting to bite on this opportunity that presented itself. Hubby happened to be off for Memorial Day observance and was looking to scope out a new fishing spot that was recommended to him by a coworker. And guess who was asked to come along for the ride?
Whoo hoo! I’m going on a fishing adventure!
Just kidding with the exclamation points (above). No, I wasn’t really excited about going. Not at all. But, my husband was happy to get me to be his tag-a-long buddy this go-around. After all, my 11-year-old, Little Man, and my daughter, Toodlez, graced him with their presence on the last two fishing trips. Therefore, it was time for me to show up; since I told him I would go fishing with him sometime in the very near future.
Today was that “very near future” I just mentioned — a day to spend some quality time with my husband away from the house and children, doing an activity that my husband truly enjoyed. Certainly, I could appreciate that fact, even though fishing is not my idea of fun-filled, outdoor entertainment.
The whole point of this fishing trip would focus on doing something unselfish to make the “other” person happy. My husband’s been in the business of doing that very act of kindness for me quite a bit lately; and, it was time for me to reciprocate. Surely, a few early morning hours of faking fishing fun could be tolerated. Hee! Hee!
What do you think happened with this challenge? Guess first and then check your answer directly below in the “Outcome of Task” section.
Duration of Task: 1 early morning session within the day.
Outcome of Task: Okay, today’s account is going to be somewhat disappointing to any of you who were counting on some creative movement to have happened today. Because, no creative movement (with content) happened whatsoever. No creative movement with fishing happened either.
We literally got rained out! Did you guess correctly?
We were rained on all the way to our fishing destination (about 30 minutes outside of our city), all during our short stint of a time at the lake scoping out this particular new fishing spot for the very first time, and all the way back home again. Actually, we knew it was supposed to rain today, but we were hoping it would let up a little — enough for my husband to cast his line out and reel something in even if it only allowed a few minutes or so of prime fishing action. (I was content on staying in the car during the onslaught of rain water. My momma didn’t raise no silly woman.)
Anyway, my husband was able to get a few minutes out on the bank with his line in the water at a couple of different spots on the lake, but the rain was coming down too heavily. So both times, he retreated back to the van (wet and fishless), where I was contently waiting (dry and fishless). Well, at least he got to check out this fishing destination and see if it would be a promising hot spot for future fishing. And, it turns out that he liked the look of things — the clean look of the water, the location, the size, the convenience of spots to set up along the bank, etc.
So, we’ll be back another day when the weather cooperates. And I can’t say the trip was a complete dud. No, not at all. It was nice to spend time with my husband — just having some alone time to enjoy his company and a change of scenery. It’s thoroughly relaxing to be a passenger in a car for a change and just sit back and soak up my surroundings while on the open road. I actually thought I’d be sleeping the whole ride to the lake and back, but the conversation was so engaging and I found myself fully awake. Well, in all actuality, I HAD to be awake on the ride home, since I was the designated driver for that leg of the trip.
Practical Application of Day 13 for Your Life: It’s good to get away from the regular grind that the work routine brings about and to remember that you have a whole life outside of content creation (or whatever it is that you do professionally). Don’t forget that the people most important to you deserve some of your undivided attention on a regular basis. (Even more so than the work-related part of your life.) Please don’t alienate your loved ones. They play a vital role in bringing balance within your life. And, BALANCE is one of the keys to quality and longevity of life. So, take frequent opportunities to exercise self-discipline and spread the love to your work as well as to your family and friends.
