Part 6:
I knew how to write business letters, agendas, and minutes for meetings; review, proofread, and draft reports and papers; create, revise, and critique resumes; formulate personal and professional emails and presentations; and generally perform whatever activity was needed where writing was involved.
Throughout the various writing activities I participated in at the time, I took them all very seriously and wanted to do the best work I could. It was like my writing was an extension of me. And in fact, it was and continues to be.
Over the years, writing had been something in the back of my mind that I’d wholeheartedly embraced but embraced as a responsibility — as my duty even — not as a privilege. But, wonder if it was meant to be that privilege I never contemplated it would be? Wonder if writing would be that purpose I was destined to fulfill? Maybe there was something to this writing thing after all.
So, I entertained the thought of what it would be like to write and not just write for writing’s sake but to write on purpose for a living. I decided to look at what I thought I could do within a creative realm going forward.
When looking at that “artistic” work that I could create from the ground up, mold, develop, and thrive in, I immediately thought of all the creative art forms out there. Could I do anything in the visual arts? Nope. Not for me. Not interested. Then, there were the performing arts. Nope, definitely outside of my comfort zone in every possible way. And, the media arts were, unfortunately, not my thing either. But, content creation (especially of the written variety) was right up my alley. Yes, I could see myself doing this very thing. After all, I’d been writing all my life. There was some reality, validity, and viability in pursuing a career in the written word.
I mean here was a creative outlet I was already participating in, so this was a bit of a no-brainer. Writing it is! All the other arts that I just mentioned are areas where creative juices magnificently flow but, definitely, were not areas I had any interest in pursuing seriously or had any credible experience in. Now, most may not consider writing as an art form. I do. However, I’m not here to debate that topic. But one thing I can say for sure is that writing is a skill, requiring the use of creativity to make words come alive in the mind of the reader. A writer creates.
Never could I ever have imagined that my writing would lend itself to new areas of discovery that would equate to creating content, requiring that I send out positive messaging on a blog, on YouTube, in emails, in writers’ forums, on social media outlets, and through my own self-published book. Never could I ever have imagined that my writing would open up opportunities for me to connect with people all over the world as we share a string of words that are brought together to produce something meaningful.
