The Art of People Business – Performing on Command

Folks, I’m going to be completely honest with you on how today’s blog post was born. It’s really pretty simple. I wasn’t feeling it . . . I mean I had a list of topics that I will (or may not ever) get to in The Art of People Business series. I guess I’ll go ahead and share some of that list with you. Check it out:

  • Aversion to Technology
  • Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone
  • The Growth Mindset
  • Stressors that Affect Your Personal Relationship
  • Responsibility Avoiders
  • Self-Care
  • Your Legacy
  • Overcoming Negative Influences
  • Feeling out of Place
  • How do you Learn?

There were more, but I’ll stop with these 10. Many of these topics have some deeply rooted connection to experiences I’ve personally gone through, am currently going through, or have been affected by in some way or another. And for those very reasons, you wouldn’t think I’d have difficulty in laying down some profound food for thought in word form.

But guess what? The struggle’s real sometimes, and it’s no joke. What I’m trying to say is today’s installment has everything to do with the unpredictable nature of human beings and the realization that we don’t perform like robots.

Robotic

Inventors, keep on creating these life-like robots that make the masses go “ooooooo” and “ahhhhh”. You do what you do; but just remember: no matter how much money you throw into the best technology, it’ll never match the human touch. Humans were created to be so incredibly unique to any other living or non-living being or thing. We’re unmatched on the complexity scale.

Now, I’m not propping us up to be the best of the best examples of created beings in all cases; because let’s face it, there are truly some rotten to the core, despicable people out here. What I am saying is that no person can pretend to know how another person will behave or respond in all situations. Ask anyone who studies the human brain and how it functions. The brain is both a marvelous and frightening construct and controls what we internalize and how we respond mentally and physically.

Well, I’ll stop with the psychobabble, because I don’t have a clue as to how truly complex the human brain (or mind — I use both interchangeably) is, but I do know this one thing: the brain may not perform on command when you want it to. And, this is my telltale story for the day.

I asked my mind to come up with some thoughtful commentary (from the topics above and others) to touch the hearts and the MINDS of the people, but to no avail. Nada. Zero. Zip. Zilch. NOTHING! Every time I’d start out on saying something meaningful about a certain topic, my heart just wasn’t fully buying it. So, I’d start over with another topic. Same thing happened. I ended up nixing that one too . . . and a few more after that.

My brain wasn’t having it. And then, it came to my mind that we shouldn’t try to manufacture (make up) things that aren’t real to us and then try to peddle them off on others. You know what I mean? Isn’t that what the robots are for?

So today, you’re getting a little break from the usual framework for The Art of People Business installment; but you’re still getting one (just a slightly different version) none the less. I’ve decided that, if I’m not feeling a certain topic for the day or a particularly structured way to deliver a certain message on that day, then I’m not going to put it out there. If I’m not in harmony with what I’m presenting to you, then why would I expect you to receive it with open arms?

I want to forever be “real” with the people that are investing their time and attention in what I have to say. I appreciate you and want to deliver the best that I’m capable of delivering each and every time. More than likely, the topics (above) may come up in the future; they’re just not going to surface this day. I want to continue to perform like a human being who feels what she portrays and means what she says. And sometimes, that means I won’t always be able to perform on command.
