Yes, I’m taking you back over a year ago to when the Degrees of Maternity (DOM) logo came to be. Since this is an older post, originally posted January 20, 2019, I thought it’d be appropriate to bring it to light again for those of you who may be wondering or have wondered what the DOM logo truly represents.
I remember being so excited when the logo came out because I finally felt that my overall brand for everything I was doing and would aspire to do was taking shape.
One update to the post though: when I originally wrote this piece, my focus was on “Moms” and how their inherent characteristics are aligned with the demeanor of a tree (the visual depiction of the DOM logo).
I’ve since recognized the importance of widening the scope of a tree’s significance. A tree, as outlined in “A Tree Comparison” (below), truly represents many more individuals’ roles in life.
Everyday, I witness diversified groups of people who are trees in their homes, neighborhoods, communities, cities, states, countries, and the world-at-large. Sure, Moms fit the tree depiction to a “T”, but so do many others.
Here’s to being a tree for those people you positively influence in your lifetime.

2019 is starting off with a bang, y’all! Degrees of Maternity (DOM) has a new logo. I’m so thrilled that I now have visual representation of my fruits of labor. As a matter of fact, I somewhat documented the preliminary stage of the logo creation process during Day 13: Procrastination Station. If you didn’t have the opportunity to check out that blog post, feel free to review what took place on that day’s challenge to result in the launching of my new logo. However, there is one update to what I originally reported on Day 13 and it has to do with the program that was used to create the logo. My son, Junior, was the technical mastermind behind the DOM Logo. With his re-evaluation of my content creation needs, it became evident that CorelDRAW was not the software that would bring the ultimate visual representation for DOM to life. Instead, we went the Adobe Illustrator route and that course of action led to what you see below:
You’ll see this logo on my blog as well as on my “Degrees of Maternity” YouTube channel and Twitter. The logo is fully functional and has brought all my new endeavors together.
Honestly, Junior was really the one who created the logo; I was just present for verbal directives and moral support. No, I take that back. I did draw in the skinny roots at the bottom of the two trees. (Did you guess that that’s what my logo depicts)? The green “D”, which stands for Degrees, is one of the treetops; and the green “O”, which stands for of, is the other treetop. Of course, the brown “M” at the bottom is the two tree trunks and stands for Maternity. Essentially, my son took the thought in my head (I did give him a pitiful drawing to go by though) and designed a visual I’m proud to call the DOM logo. I must say that it’s quite wonderful to have my own online graphic designer on retainer and I didn’t even have to shell out any dollar bills. He accepted payment in compliments and hugs. So now that you know what you’re looking at, let me give you a run-down of what the trees in the DOM logo symbolize to me:
A TREE COMPARISON
Life-Sustainer – the very breath we breathe is needed to prolong life. A tree releases oxygen into the air, which benefits all living things.
Protector – a tree provides shade from sunlight, a home for many living things, and a hiding place from predators.
Nurturer – a tree’s leaves, bark, roots, and fruit can appease the hunger and thirst of other living beings. Food comes forth and nourishes.
Multi-role Fulfiller – not only does a tree do all the things above and all the things below, but its importance is prevalent throughout the world in which we live. Think about the multi-faceted uses of the tree. It can be found as the pencil you hold, the paper you write on, the wood-burning fire you sit by, the furniture you sit on, the house you live in, and so much more.
All-natural Force – a tree is found in nature. It’s an earthen creation that holds a God-given purpose in every fiber of its being.
Beautiful Diversifier – as an aggregate, trees come in many different traits such as color, shape, size, height, origin, natural talents, etc.; and they are all individually beautiful in their own unique right.
Change Adapter – a tree can still function and thrive during seasonal and daily/weekly weather changes as well as when man-made external forces cause havoc all around it.
Storm Weatherer – isn’t it amazing how a tree can withstand the brute force of a natural disaster or a milder storm that’s still very traumatizing to other living and non-living things that may come within its path? After the storm, you observe the devastation and somehow the tree is still standing in its tried-and-tested strength. It might be a little tattered and worn, but it’s still standing to live another day.
Now let’s flip the switch. Mom, does this outstanding force of nature sound like someone you know? Could that someone possibly be you? The DOM logo contains not one but two trees. Why? Well, the two trees are a reminder that each one of us individually should never go life’s road alone. In order to be the tree we need to be, it takes support from one another (as Moms) as well as family, friends, and other positive influences alike. Let’s never feel like we’re alone. Even the strongest of trees needs a little help from time to time.
