Wise Saying #2

Today’s wise saying is a Toodlez original.  Yes, my daughter’s written content is the inspiration for Wise Saying #2.  Prepare yourself for some awesome profoundness from an at-that-time high school senior.  And, here it is… “The unpredictable future and the memorable past depend on the individual in the present.”  Say that, girl!  I still get goosebumps every time I read this truism that my first-born created.  It was originally published as a sentence within a bigger college essay that she wrote for consideration for a 4-year prestigious scholarship as well as for Honors College admission at the university she would be attending in the next few months.

While Toodlez doesn’t necessarily consider herself a writer at heart; as her writer momma, I’d have to say that she laid down the written word like nobody’s business.  Toodlez’ college essay was only one of a myriad of proud moments for me; and furthermore, she did end up receiving the scholarship and acceptance into the Honors College program.  It’s hard to believe that that took place four whole years ago, when she was a senior in high school and soon to achieve the notable credential of high school graduate.  Now, I look at my daughter and reflect in awe at how quickly we got to this present point in time.  She will be graduating this May (now less than two months away) as a college graduate with an engineering degree and a full-time engineering position waiting for her after graduation.  I’m totally blown away… blown away at how fast time flies by and blown away at how Toodlez’ wise saying has proven true to form in her very own life.

Graduation

However, it’s quite evident, once you meditate on Wise Saying #2, that it’s not exclusive to Toodlez’ life only, but is a universal truth while being uniquely individualized to all of us as members of the human race.  In other words, what a person does in the present has a direct correlation to what was experienced in that individual’s past and, therefore, has a direct correlation to what that same individual will encounter in the future.  As I look back over the expanse of my daughter’s lifetime from birth until her young adulthood, I am mindful of the fact that her past successes are an integral part of her current successes; and that what she does now has set her up for further success in the future.

Now, I’d like for you to take this saying and reflect on how it applies to your own life, remembering that life is a journey that plays out uniquely from person to person.  Only you can take what you gained from your past and apply it to your present, ultimately affecting what goes on in your future.  Okay, I don’t want to belabor the point, but I do want to make sure you understand what Toodlez was emphasizing with Wise Saying #2, since you don’t get the benefit of reading the context first-hand from her college essay.  So, here’s the last reiteration (I promise) of today’s wise saying:  learn from your past to make the most of your present, while planning for your future.  Regardless of the wise saying version you choose to adopt, we can probably all agree that the common denominator in all of them is YOU.
